Post-op Instructions
Uvulo-Palatoplasty (LAUP)
1. Activities: Resume regular activities. Keep talking to minimum
2. Call Dr.’s office for: excessive bleeding, nausea and vomiting, progressive, persistent pain, temperature above 101 degrees, or difficulty in swallowing (after anesthetic has worn off).
3. Soft foods the first day. No carbonated drinks or citrus fruits or drinks. No hot or cold drinks. Try to drink plenty of fluids. Avoid alcohol. These restrictions apply for 2-3 days.
4. If you have not urinated in 8 hours after surgery call your Doctor.
5. Gargle with Hydrogen Peroxide, 1Tbs. in 1 cup water, AM and PM. Do not swallow. You may brush teeth and use diluted mouthwash. Foul odor is common at first.
6. You may have a sore throat or an ear ache - use prescription medication for 3-4 days, after this you may use Tylenol by mouth. No aspirin, Motrin or any NSAIDS.
7. No driving until instructed by physician. Do not sign legal documents for 24 hours.
8. If you have had sedation/general anesthesia please have person with you for 24 hours.
POSTOPERATIVE TELEPHONE CALL: A representative from the Surgery Center will be calling you by telephone after surgery. Do not be alarmed. This is a routine call to find out how you are progressing after your surgery.
If you find that you can not contact your physician, but you feel that your signs and symptoms warrant a physician’s attention, go to an Emergency Room which is closest to you.
