Post-op Instructions
Vasectomy
1. Activity:
Stay on bed rest first 24 hours.
1st post-op – May be up and about (Return to bed rest if you experience undue discomfort).
3rd post-op – May return to work related activities. No strenuous exercise for 10-14 days.
2. Sexual relations may be resumed any time, but it is recommended that you wait 3 to 7 days to resume intercourse.
3. Continue to use some form of birth control until you have two negative specimens. (First one being 2 months post-op).
4. Wound care:
1st day – large amount fluffed 4 x4’s and athletic support (to keep swelling or any tendency for bleeding).
2nd day – remove fluffed 4 x 4’s and place single gauze 4 x 4 on each side of scrotum over wound. Continue to use this type dressing for a minimum of 3 days along with use of athletic support.
5. Bathing:
1st week – Recommend showers, keeping water to your back, keep water flow to minimum on scrotum wounds. If no shower available bathe in very low tub of water being sure not to immerse scrotal wounds, then cleanse areas with hydrogen peroxide.
2nd week – Increase water flow to area and may lather with soap, then may stop cleansing.
6. Suture removal – No suture removal needed.
7. Diet – As tolerated.
8. POSTOPERATIVE TELEPHONE CALL: A representative from the Surgery Center may call you by telephone a few days after surgery. Do not be alarmed. This is a routine call to find out how you are progressing after your surgery.
If you should experience difficulty in breathing, bleeding that you feel is excessive, persistent nausea or vomiting, any pain that is unusual, swelling or fever, please call your physician. If you find that you cannot contact your warrant a physician’s attention, go to the nearest Emergency Room.
