Post-op Instructions
Nasal Surgery
1. Rest at home for first 24 hours. Then increase activities over 1 week.
2. Diet as tolerated.
3. Things to avoid:
a. Do not blow your nose for one week.
b. Do not use Aspirin or Aspirin products.
c. Do not lift objects over five pounds for two weeks.
d. Do not bother sutures inside nose – They will dissolve.
e. Sneeze only with your mouth open widely.
4. Things to exspect:
a. Small amount bright red bleeding through first week.
b. Swelling or discoloration (amount varies with procedure).
c. Nasal packing for several days (may have).
d. Tape or plaster splint to nose (may have).
5. Use pain medication as instructed by physician.
6. Keep your head elevated on three pillows to decrease swelling and allow better drainage of nasal discharge.
7. Notify your doctor immediately for temperature elevation over 101 degrees, vomiting continuing for longer than 24 hours, or bright red bleeding that lasts more than 10 minutes or is heavy.
8. If you are to use salt-water irrigations, do so the day after surgery.
9. Take medications as directed.
10. May be dizzy or lightheaded on day of surgery. No strenuous exercise, no alcohol, no driving for 48 hours post-op. Do not make any legal decisions or sign any legal documents for 24 hours post-op.
11. Call Dr. if patient complains of needing to urinate but is unable to.
a. Infant/ toddler 4-6 hours.
b. Child 6-8 hours.
c. Adult 8 hours.
POSTOPERATIVE TELEPHONE CALL: A representative from the Surgery Center may call you by telephone a few days after surgery. Do not be alarmed. This is a routine call to find out how you are progressing after your surgery.
If you find that you can not contact your physician, but you feel that your signs and symptoms warrant a physician’s attention, go to an Emergency Room which is closest to you.
