Post-op Instructions
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
1. Activity: Rest at home for first 24 hours. Then increase activities over one week.
2. Diet: As tolerated
3. Things to Avoid:
a. Do not blow your nose for three weeks.
b. Sneeze only with your mouth wide open.
c. Do not lift heavy objects over five pounds.
4. Suggestions for comfort:
a. Elevate head on three pillows.
b. Ice packs over cheeks for 15- 20 minutes every 3-4 hours.
c. Cool vapor humidifier at bedside for first week.
d. Take all medications as directed.
e. Do not use Aspirin or Aspirin products.
5. Use pain medications as directed by physician.
6. Call your doctor immediately for any of the following:
a. Bright red bleeding for more than 10 minutes or heavy bleeding.
b. Fever over 101 degrees, neck stiffness, or unrelieved headaches.
c. Vision problems: Double vision, loss of vision, black eyes or bulging of eyes.
d. Vomiting lasting more than 24 hours.
7. If directed, start salt-water irrigations day after surgery.
8. May be dizzy or lightheaded on day of surgery. No strenuous exercise, no alcohol, no driving for 48 hours post-op. Do not make any legal decisions or sign any legal documents for 24 hours post-op.
9. Call Dr. if patient complains of needing to urinate but is unable to.
a. Infant/ toddler 4-6 hours.
b. Child 6-8 hours.
c. Adult 8 hours.
If you find that you can not contact your physician, but you feel that your signs and symptoms warrant a physician’s attention, go to an Emergency Room which is closest to you.
