Post-op Instructions
Ear Surgery
1. Thing to avoid:
a. Blowing nose for three weeks after surgery.
b. Sneezing – Do only with mouth open widely
c. Never hold nose to clear ears.
d. Washing your hair – Allow at least 1 week.
e. Disturbing ear dressing for at least two days.
f. No alcoholic beverages for three weeks.
g. No driving through high mountains nor flying aircraft for two months
h. Do not return to work or school for 7-10 days.
2. You may experience minor jaw or ear discomfort and difficulty chewing food for first few days. Take antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed by your doctor.
3. Call Dr. if patient complains of needing to urinate but is unable to.
a. Infant/ toddler 4-6 hours.
b. Child 6-8 hours.
c. Adult 8 hours.
4. Report any temperature elevation above 101 degrees, nausea and vomiting, unrelieved pain, dizziness, or drainage from ear to your doctor.
5. Resume your regular diet.
6. If your symptoms warrant a physician’s attention and you are unable to contact our doctor, go to the closest Emergency Room.
7. If you have cotton ball dressing, you may remove outer cotton only as needed. If you have incision on top of ear, coat it with antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) after cleaning with Hydrogen Peroxide daily.
8. You may be dizzy or lightheaded on day of surgery. No strenuous exercise, no alcohol and no driving for 48 hours post- op. Do not make any legal decisions or sign any legal documents for 24 hours post- op.
9. Pain medication given as directed by physician.
POSTOPERATIVE TELEPHONE CALL: A representative from the Surgery Center will call you by telephone a few days after surgery. Do not be alarmed. This is a routine call to find out how you are progressing after your surgery.
If you find that you can not contact your physician, but you feel that your signs and symptoms warrant a physician’s attention, go to an Emergency Room which is closest to you.
