Post-op Instructions
Laprascopic Hernia Repair
1. Call Dr.’s office for: Temperature above 101 degrees, persistent vomiting, nausea, fever, dizziness, of light headedness that persists, progressively increasing abdominal pain. Yellow / green drainage from wound or excessive bleeding.
2. Advanced diet as tolerated to resume pre-operative diet.
3. Take pain medication as prescribed. Post-op discomfort should significantly resolve after first 48 hours.
4. Keep incision dry and clean for 48 hours, then may shower keeping steristrips in place 7-10 days. Dressing / bandaids may be removed after 48 hours.
5. Ambulate as tolerated. Avoid vigorous activity until post-op visit. No heavy lifting till seen by doctor.
6. Call doctor’s office for any concerns prior to office visit.
7. Swelling and bruising to groin and scrotum are not unusual. It may be helpful to wear scrotal support / ice packs in first 48 hours.
8. If you have not urinated 8 hours after arriving home, contact your surgeon.
9. No driving until seen by physician.
10. Do not sign any legal documents for 24 hours.
POSTOPERATIVE TELEPHONE CALL: A representative from the Surgery Center may call you by telephone a few days after surgery. Do not be alarmed. This is a routine call to find out how you are progressing after your surgery.
If you should experience difficulty in breathing, bleeding that you feel is excessive, persistent nausea or vomiting, any pain that is unusual, swelling or fever, please call your physician. If you find that you cannot contact your warrant a physician’s attention, go to the nearest Emergency Room.
