Post-op Instructions
Jackson – Pratt Drain
1. After surgery you may have a “JP” drain to wound area to collect excess drainage.
2. Be sure to secure drain with tape to avoid pulling or tugging of the drain by clothes. Ensure that bulb is secured below wound site.
3. Keep bulb compressed to promote drainage into reservoir.
4. Empty bulb reservoir as needed or at least once daily and measure drainage and record. (a small measuring cup will be sent home with you on your day of surgery.)
5. To empty bulb:
A. Open outlet port.
B. Invert bulb.
C. Squeeze bulb to expel contents into measuring device.
6. . To re-establish suction:
A. Squeeze bulb flat and close outlet port.
B. Hissing sound may be heard and is normal. It will stop when maximum suction is reached.
7. For any excessive drainage, questions, or problems with “JP” drain, contact your doctor.
POSTOPERATIVE TELEPHONE CALL: A representative from the Surgery Center may call you by telephone a few days after surgery. Do not be alarmed. This is a routine call to find out how you are progressing after your surgery.
If you should experience difficulty in breathing, bleeding that you feel is excessive, persistent nausea or vomiting, any pain that is unusual, swelling or fever, please call your physician. If you find that you cannot contact your warrant a physician’s attention, go to the nearest Emergency Room.
