Post-op Instructions
Hemorroidectomy
1. Some bleeding (especially with first bowel movement) is normal. If the operative area shows signs of excessive bleeding (Slow general oozing that saturates the dressing completely or frank bright red bleeding) contact your physician at once.
2. Seeing some blood on the stools is very common and that should dissipate quickly. It has rarely ever caused any problem.
3. Remove the outer dressing with the first bowel movement. Your rectal packing will be expelled during this bowel movement. You do not have to replace the dressing.
4. May shower after first bowel movement.
5. If you are given a prescription for narcotic pain medicine before you leave, use caution when taking narcotic medication because they affect you ability to concentrate. You should not drive while taking them. Do not take them on an empty stomach because they might cause nausea.
6. May use an over the counter stool softner as needed.
7. Warm sitz baths as recommended by your physician.
If you should experience difficulty in breathing, bleeding that you feel is excessive, persistent nausea or vomiting, any pain that is unusual, swelling or fever, please call your physician. If you find that you cannot contact your warrant a physician’s attention, go to the nearest Emergency Room.
